Ruth Mathes Scholarships

The Trust established this Scholarship Fund to honor the memory of one of our founding members, Ruth Mathes, who was instrumental in organizing the Trust and creating the conservation agreement covering the approximate 800 acres of forests, marshes and coastline surrounding the LNG terminal in Lusby, MD

Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) have been created with local academic institutions to establish the Ruth Mathes Scholarship Programs at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, PEARL (Morgan State), College of Southern Maryland, University of Maryland, Patuxent High School and Calvert High School. We provide annual scholarship awards ranging from $1000 to $3000. Please contact these financial institutions financial aid offices for details.

 

2026 Small Grants Program

To support our mission to preserve and protect ecologically sensitive sites in Southern Maryland through land conservation, acquisition, scientific research and environmental education, the Trust has established a fund of $35,000 for 2026 to support Small Grants focused on ecological research and/or assessment and environmental education projects ranging from $1,000 - $2,500.

Survey of RTE Plant Species at Cove Point

We are seeking an individual or company that can provide a survey of rare, endangered and/or threatened plants at the fresh water marsh at Cove Point. The survey has been completed for the past 20 years and the opportunity exists now that the researcher is now retiring.
